A federal credit union's field of membership can cross a state line under various scenarios. Statistical areas, rural districts, and adjacent areas can all cross state lines. Under the new rule, a rural district may only cross into state immediately adjacent to the state where the credit union’s headquarters are located. The credit union must show it has both the ability and intent to serve the area and that it qualifies as a well-defined local community or rural district.
