Resources are available for individuals who need assistance preparing their tax returns, including free tax preparation services for those who qualify. In addition, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offers a wide range of free tax help services.
Before preparing your taxes, take the time to organize your paystubs, W-2 forms sent from your employers, tax statements sent by banks or credit unions and other important documents. This will not only help you with preparing your taxes, but a good habit to maintain while managing your finances.
Free Tax Return Assistance
Qualified individuals may be eligible to receive free tax preparation services through their credit union and claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The Earned Income Tax Credit is designed to help low- to moderate-income individuals, military personnel and the elderly keep more of their earnings.
In 2012, over 23,000 tax returns were completed and $13,961,738 in Earned Income Tax Credits returned to members and communities. This was the result of a partnership between the NCUA and the Internal Revenue Service Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The VITA program provides grants to credit unions for free tax preparation services to members in need.
If you require assistance, check with your local credit union to see if the service is available. To learn more visit MyCreditUnion.gov or IRS.gov.
Tax Return Assistance for Veterans
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is committed to providing assistance to veterans and veterans with disabilities. They work with community and government partners to provide timely federal tax-related information to veterans about tax credits and benefits, free tax preparation, and asset-building opportunities available to them.
